ARE Australia Acquired by SSP Group

February – ARE announced the agreement to sell 100% of its Australian shares to SSP Group (SSP), a leading operator of restaurants, bars, cafes and other food and beverage outlets in travel locations across 36 countries.

August – We are very pleased to announce the very first KFC outlets on any Australian Airport after 55 years of the brand being in Australia. ARE has opened 2 new KFC outlets In Terminals 1 and 2 at Sydney Airport.

Melbourne Airport

August – In our first foray into Melbourne’s Qantas Terminal at Melbourne (T1) we opened 3 new outlets – St Ali, Hungry Jacks and Sushi Jiro.

2023

London Heathrow Airport

ARE UK teamed up with independent Surrey based brewer Big Smoke Brewing Co to bring 2 new brands to London Heathrow’s Terminal 3 and 5. The Oceanic and The Globe will serve Big Smoke’s core range of beers and gins accompanied by seasonal food and friendly service. Big Smoke has designed an exclusive beer for Heathrow call Flight Mode – a crisp and refreshing 4% pilsner.

London Luton Airport

Following on from the success of the Big Smoke Taphouse and Kitchen at Heathrow, ARE UK opened a second outlet at London’s Luton airport with a wide range of seasonal options for all day dining and a focus on brunch with a daily fresh breakfast menu.

2022

Heathrow Terminal 2

ARE UK has teamed up with Big Smoke Brew Co in the UK to open Big Smoke Taphouse and Kitchen at Heathrow’s Terminal 2. With a focus on comforting pub classics, all day breakfasts and sharing dishes and comfortable surroundings that make every customer feel welcome.

2021

Canberra Airport

With the revitalised food court at Canberra Airport opening in December ARE has 5 new outlets opening in Canberra Airport. Drawing on local suppliers and produce is a huge part of what ARE does so it makes sense to open Capital Brewing Co Taproom, Baker’s Cut, City Hill Cafe and Noodles XO to the airport.

Melbourne International Airport

ARE opens St. ALi in Melbourne’s International Terminal. A local institution in the Melbourne coffee scene, St ALi has a strong focus on ethically sourced coffee beans and a dedication to making the best cup of coffee. St ALi also has a retail component where customers can buy their favourite coffee beans.

Sydney Domestic Terminal 2

Tapping into Australia’s passion for microbrewing ARE opens Fat Yak Bar in Sydney’s Terminal 2. Fat Yak is one of Australia’s most recognised craft beers and the bar focuses on local, premium boutique beers matched with a tasty menu of freshly made pizza and skewers.

2019

Brisbane Domestic Terminal

In our second collaboration with world renowned chef, Bruno Loubet, ARE opens Seeds by Bruno Loubet in the Brisbane Qantas Terminal. Focussing on sustainable eating and drawing on Australia’s freshest ingredients, Seeds aims to bring customers fresh, delicious meals.

2018

Townsville and Mt Isa

ARE takes over three existing sites in the Townsville and Mt Isa airports. They are in the process of refurbishment and we look forward to offering a fresh new look in the near future.

Melbourne International Airport

ARE proudly introduces a new brand, Urban Provodore to the Melbourne International Terminal. Showcasing the finest of Melbourne’s food, wine and beer by selling local and regional produce in the heart of the airport.

ARE undertakes major refurbishments of two of our most popular Melbourne outlets, Café Vue and Bar Pulpo by Movida. Located in the Melbourne International Terminal.

Sydney International Airport

Sydney International Terminal: October – ARE partners with Luke Mangan to open Chicken Confidential in the Sydney International Terminal. Serving organic chicken with a cheeky brand message, this outlet is a crowd favourite.

Sydney Domestic Terminal 2

Pete’s Pies opens in Sydney Terminal 2. Selling gourmet pies and sausage rolls as well as artisan coffee this is a great place to stop and grab something to eat before your flight.

2017

Sydney International Terminal

A world first – Peroni Bar opens in the Sydney International Terminal. This Peroni branded outlet has a great atmosphere and fantastic menu to complement the beers on tap.

Sydney International Terminal

ARE opens Better Burger serving chef-designed gourmet burgers. The new trend for gourmet burgers is now available at the airport.

Brisbane Domestic Terminal

ARE opened Merlo Caffe in the Southern Food Hall of the Virgin Terminal. Merlo has an all day menu and serves Merlo Private blend

The opening of Graze Grill & Bar, a new delicatessen style concept in serving cured meats and freshly baked artisan breads was a real win for airport travellers.

2016

Melbourne Terminal 4

ARE opened up a number of outlets in Melbourne in 2015. From the industrial style and high quality product of Quikshots to the artisan brand Brasserie Bread and the great product mix of Go Convenience, there’s something for everyone in T4.

Sydney Domestic Terminal 3

Viaggio opens in the arrivals hall with an Italian feel. Serving great coffee, snacks and alcohol.

Sydney International Terminal

ARE opens Grand Cru, serving Allpress coffee, hot meals and a full bar. We also opened Mach2, from the famed Machiavelli restaurant family. This Italian dining venue has a full menu and bar and serves Vittoria coffee

2015

Sydney Domestic Terminal 2

ARE partners with Frank Camorra to bring his 6th Movida to Sydney Airport. This traditional Spanish tapas bar opened in August in terminal 2 and serves a great range of Spanish favourites and a selection of local and imported beers and wines.

Brisbane Domestic

In April ARE opens Bar Roma in Brisbane. This is the second Bar Roma in Australia. Bar Roma is a blend of the traditional Italian trattoria with a modern, contemporary outlet.

2013

Sydney Qantas Domestic Terminal

ARE redeveloped its signature Velocity and NRG Express brands and introduced Toby’s Estate Café and Bar Corretto into the Qantas Domestic Terminal as part of Qantas’ food court refurbishment.

2012

Melbourne International Terminal

ARE completed the build of its international operations, opening Hungry Jack’s, Wok On Air, Bar Pulpo by MoVida and, following the success of Café Vue airside, a landside Café Vue Express outlet.

Sydney Domestic Terminal 2

ARE successfully tendered for three new Premium Dining outlets at Sydney’s Terminal 2. By the end of the year, Bistro 2020 was in operation, with Brasserie Bread and Toby’s Estate to follow in 2012.

2011

Sydney International Airport

ARE acquired Rossini Gastronomia, Rossini Gelateria, Bar Savoia and Naan Man Du in the Sydney International food court, with refurbishments to all outlets scheduled in 2011.

Melbourne International Airport

ARE successfully tendered for the food and beverage outlets at Melbourne International Airport’s airside food court. The flagship restaurant of the terminal is Shannon Bennett’s Café Vue.

2010

Gold Coast Airport

ARE opens a refurbished NRG Express, Velocity, Zoom and Hungry Jack’s in the new Gold Coast common user terminal.

2009

Sydney International Terminal

ARE opens the Viaggio Vittoria café in the new landside food court. This opening sees ARE now operating the major premium coffee outlets in all three Sydney Airport terminals.

Virgin Sydney Terminal

In July, ARE acquired the buzzing Quikfix coffee outlet, rebranded it Quikshots, and watched sales increase due to improved operations.

2008

Brisbane Domestic

ARE opened Wok On Air, NRG Express, Velocity, Subway and Hungry Jack’s outlets in the terminal’s food court, and wins Qantas’ inaugural ‘Retailer of the Year’ Award for the redevelopment.

2007

Brisbane Domestic

ARE opened Atmosphere, a destination café with bar, coffee, full menu and huge plasma TV screens so customers can see current sporting events while they eat.

Sydney International

ARE joined forces with the iconic Sydney café, Bar Coluzzi, to open a Bar Coluzzi at the Sydney International Terminal. This was ARE’s first experience in franchised brands, and is considered a huge success.

2006

Sydney Domestic

ARE opened Bar Roma – an Italian café with thin-crusted Roman style pizza, espresso coffee and a full bar, and NRG Juice, serving fresh juices.

2004

Sydney Domestic

ARE opened its now signature noodle outlet, Wok on Air and Ignite Grill at the terminal, creating the first ever freshly cooked meal offer on Australian airports.

Coolangatta Domestic

ARE opened Pure NRG, Velocity and Refuel in the newly renovated Qantas end of the Coolangatta airport, after successfully running temporary operations at the site for over 12 months.

2003

Central Station, Brisbane

ARE opened Zoom and Pure NRGin the busy CBD terminal, further strengthening ARE’s brand presence off airports.

2002

Sydney International and Domestic

ARE acquired Bar Italia in both terminals, strengthening the company’s presence in Sydney. In September ARE opened Zoom.

2001

Sydney Domestic

Based on the success of ARE brands in Brisbane, ARE introduced Velocity and Pure NRG, completed in time for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

1999

Brisbane Domestic

In a pivotal moment in airport retailing, ARE developed generic Food & Beverage brands to operate in a food court environment. The brands included Velocity, Refuel, Pure NRG and Tanja’s.

1998

Cairns International

Following on from its success at the Domestic Terminal, ARE established Australian Gems & Jewellery at Cairns International Airport.

Perth

ARE commenced the operation of two gift shops (Oz Shopand Australian Gems & Jewellery) and an ice cream shop, Fruit Scoops at the Perth International Terminal.

1997

Cairns Domestic

ARE acquired Australian Gems & Jewellery at the Cairns Domestic Airport, based on its successful management of its Food & Beverage operations.

Darwin

ARE purchased all Food & Beverage operations at the Darwin Terminal. On take over, ARE introduced Australian Gems & Jewellery, a Café and News & Gifts

1996

Alice Springs

Overcoming the challenges of operating in the new terminal’s harsh desert location, ARE produced Bar & Bistro, News & Gifts and Australian Gems & Jewellery.

1991

Cairns

ARE established a Food & Beverage business at the International Terminal, capitalising on international transit trade. ARE operated Food & Beverage and Gift Stores for seven years.

1990

Brisbane Domestic

ARE secured all food & beverage operations at the new Domestic Terminal for Australian Airlines (Qantas) and Ansett. This involved a complete fit-out at a cost of over $3 million.

1987

Perth

ARE’s design and construction of a News & Gift outlet at the brand new Perth International Terminal coincided with Australia’s defence of the America’s Cup.

1986

Brisbane

ARE converted a World War II hangar into the Brisbane International Terminal’s concessions. From 1985 to 1990 annual sales grew from $1.3million to $6million.

1985

Melbourne

ARE operated three news agency bookstalls at the new Tullamarine Airport for eight years, making ARE the largest bookseller in Victoria at the time.
