Rheanne Dickason wins ARE's Barista of the Year Competition
After months of preparation, training and studying, Rheanne Dickason from Sydney's Gourmet Cellars has taken out first place in ARE's national Barista-Off final on December 8. In front of ARE's managers, key Qantas personnel and a crowd of interested customers, Rheanne beat thirteen other finalists from ARE's Brisbane and Gold Coast sites, to win an all expenses paid trip for two to Italy. The ARE site with the highest combined scores was the Gold Coast Airport team, consisting of Kara Hall, Sarah Hausman, Sharlotte Broomhead and Troy Dunford. The runners up in this year's individual competition were Phoebe Haywood from Brisbane Airport in second place, and Sarah Hausman from Gold Coast Airport in third.
Rheanne Dickason has been working the 5.30am shift at Gourmet Cellars in Sydney for two years now, and in that time has jumped from Counter Hand to Supervisor to Head Coffee Trainer for Sydney. Rheanne's signature latte design is a fire-breathing pac-man, but in the finals she was more conservative with her three rosettas and a heart. Lattes are her favourite to make, but to drink - an affogatto every time. Rheanne offered one of her prize plane tickets to Italy to her mum, who politely declined and told her to take her best friend Vinnie and have a crazy time. This fun loving, pink-haired 24 year old will be doing just that in October 2011. Rheanne's dream is to run her own hole-in-the-wall coffee shop in a busy Sydney spot, like Circular Quay or Bondi. No real focus on food, but great coffee for regular, passionate coffee drinkers. We've no doubt she'll realise this dream, but hope to hold on to her at Gourmet Cellars for a bit longer before it happens!
